Rumor: Mario Kart for Switch brings a mix of old and new.

The Switch version of Mario Kart 8 will contain all of the previous Wii U content (tracks, characters) plus all of the Wii U DLC. This shouldn’t come as a surprise since the three minute Switch teaser showed two players racing through one of Mario Kart 8’s DLC tracks — GCN Yoshi Circuit. For those 3DS owners who skipped out on the Wii U, the Switch version of Mario Kart 8 should be a very tempting offer.

But why should Wii U owners care?

According to sources close to Nintendo, the Switch version of Mario Kart 8 will feature tons of exclusive content including brand new tracks, new playable characters, and a new-and-improved battle mode. That’s right, Nintendo listened to everyone’s criticisms about Mario Kart 8’s battle mode.

Mario Kart has completed development, and it’s planned to be released within the first three months of Switch’s launch.

I’d go with because I can’t play Mario Kart on the Switch? 🙂 Seriously though, glad to hear of a real battle mode. I’d argue they should have done something with the Wii U version in a late game patch or even just smaller maps.

But is this being thrown as Mario Kart Switch, or Mario Kart 8, Switch Edition? Sounds like it’s the latter (especially given the timing, seems pretty quick?)?

    1. Emily said it won’t be available on launch day, instead it’ll be available within the first few months which will make it a launch window title

  2. Luckily there aren’t many Wii U owners like me…..because who wants to buy the same games again so soon after you first bought them. Nevermind having to buy a new $250+ system with similar power/controls just to have that privilege. 🙂

It could be an image problem for NIntendo. I get that these games weren’t widely played and they are good games so why not rerelease them on a new more attractive system that should get a wider audience. But, for some of the more diehard fans who already own a Wii U, ….it does feel like either the 1st party games are pretty much what you paid for already or there is no reason they couldn’t run on the system you have….. if all you want to do is play on your big screen tv.

    1. Porting games over to the next gen isn’t anything new. Microsoft and Sony also did it and people ended up buying. The Last of Us for example.

    2. If they offer at an extremely reduced price (or free) to Wii U version owners I can see the promise of extra DLC to be very tempting, especially because many Wii U owners will probably not be feeling especially happy with the Wii U’s run and Nintendo wants to avoid releasing a bunch of consoles like Sega did.

  3. Portable Mario Kart 8 with a fixed battle mode sounds like heaven to me.

I wonder if they’ll remove coin items? That was my other big issue with the game.

  4. The only people who want a Nintendo device are little kids or pedos. The only reason Nintendo even still exists, is because the fanbase is so fucking zealot like, they make ISIS members blush. Anyways, once this sad excuse of a console fails, Microsoft is going to own it. Once the might and money of Microsoft takes over Nintendo, Sony and Valve will be CRUSHED within a couple of months. I can’t wait till Xbox wins – sick of you clowns over at Sony, Nintendo and Valve. #teamxbox #nintendont #sonyponyfail
